Being less than a mile from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, Quail Woods is at the heart of a school town. There are over a half dozen High Schools and as many Middle Schools, as well as plenty of alternative schools in greater Wilmington. There are also several churches of varying religions and community centers in close proximity of this neighborhood.

Wilmington has a rich history dating to precolonial days and has often times been pivotal to the shaping of America. The city has always had a deep connection with and scholarly interest in its eventful past. Through organizations like the Historic Wilmington Foundation and the Cape Fear Museum, emphasis is put on the preservation of the past and its connection to its modern culture.

Culture

A short ten minute drive places Quail Woods residents in downtown Wilmington, where they can enjoy food, music and art celebrated seasonally through festivals and a booming tourism industry. The free trolley and the Cape Fear River walk in historic downtown are a great introduction to what makes the area so special.

Blues, Jazz and Bluegrass festivals pepper the events calendar while art walks and the renowned Festival of Trees provide ample eye candy. Annual events like the Wine and Food Festival, Oktoberfest celebrations, and Restaurant Week are sure to gratify, while there exists a plethora of activities to work off those well-earned pounds.

Recreation

Quail Woods’ close proximity to the Cape Fear River and Masonboro Island grants residents access to fishing, kayaking, canoeing and even surfing. All of the traditional American sports are available here with ample parks, fields and golf courses close by.

The Althea Gibson Tennis Complex located in Empire Park is a mere 500 meters from Quail Woods. Hiking trails and bike paths provide great means of active transportation, while a fully developed infrastructure allow for easy commutes around the city.

Economy and Infrastructure

Wilmington is in the beginning stages of their “5 Year Improvement Plan,” a multimillion dollar city-wide renovation project that promises to create more bicycle and pedestrian facilities, further park and bridge maintenance, and continue street rehabilitation.

A part of North Carolina’s Research Coast, Wilmington boasts an industrial base which includes electrical, medical, telecommunications, clothing and apparel, food processing, paper products, nuclear fuel, and pharmaceuticals. A 2007 study by the Milken Institute ranked Wilmington #2 in the country for projected job growth.
